mulatto
Etymology: Spanish mulato, from mulo mule, from Latin mulus
Date: 1593
1 : the first-generation offspring of a black person and a white
person
2 : a person of mixed white and black ancestry

"Mulatto" is a word which should never be used in polite conversation,
except to expose outdated colonial racism.

And it was NOT the English colonies in America that invented the term
"mulatto", or the concept that "one drop of Negro blood" made a person
a N****r.

The Americans inherited this notion from the Spanish colonial system
of caste and class when they began to settle the Louisiana territory.
The French were more racially tolerant than the

Spanish, because they had not fought the Moors for 800 years. There
were many racially mixed French/African "creoles" who were sons of
wealthy French families and they travelled freely to the Caribbean and
to France where they attended universities.

However, the Spaniards in Louisiana treated Africans quite differently
during their racial and ethnic cleansing campaign.

Christian Spaniards (who were mostly of White European descent) had
battled the
Muslims (who were often of African descent) for 800 years, during the
Reconquest of the Iberian peninsula.

The aristocratic families of the White Spaniards, Muslims and Jews got
along during peacetime, they engaged in commerce to their mutual
benefit.

However, in 1492, Their Catholic Majesties Ferdinand and Ysabella
finally succeeded in expelling the last Moorish sultan from Spain and
then gave all Muslims and Jews 30 days to convert to Christianity or
leave Spain.

During period of the Spanish colonial system in the Americas, a system
of caste and class was in effect, with each possible permutation of
racial mixture considered and named.

Each mixture also had an animal nickname. For instance, a person of
Spanish and Indian descent was called a "mestizo", relating to his
"mixed" blood, and the animal nickname for that caste was "coyote".

"Coyote" still survives today, but is usually thought to refer only to
smugglers of illegal immigrants.

And, most Americans ignorantly think nothing of calling a racially
mixed person of African and White descent a "mulatto", even though it
means "mule", which was the Spanish nickname for such persons.

Hell, let's use modern terms. Instead of animals, why
don't we use something innocuous, like cookies which
are made up of several ingredients, We can call Bee-HO
an "Oreo". Who could object to chocolate cookies with
a creamy white center.
