We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
drugs began to take hold. I remember YAPH saying
something like:

[1] and no, there wasn't a water softener in the system, or any evidence
of a bag-in-the-tank type scale inhibitor in the tank.

But you never know - there could have been, for years.
