It's called a railway...


Railways may be fuel efficient but being able to choose when to leave
the train could also be resource efficient. OK it's a long way off but
intelligently controlled traffic management may be on its way, in
which case the chief benefit of a train, in fuel effectiveness due to
low frontal area to payload, may come to roads.

In an ideal word, railways make the most sense for medium-long haul.
typically miles and up..to the limit of the continent!

What holds it back chiefly is the lack of efficient container
loading/unloading.

And no interest in providing it.
