Default Please recommend non-telco long distance service?

The answer depends upon your long distance usage,. especially if you need
international calls. Some of the suggestions you're receiving don't
consider international calls, which are important to me. My Embarq LD plan
costs $3.00 per month and US LD calls are $.10 per minute. International
calls are also at an attractive rate which varies by country.

One family member living in England signed up with Vonage and was given a
Virginia telephone number. That means I can call him from my cell phone at
no cost (within my time limits) or landline for $.10 / minute, which is very
economical for me.

Embarq is my local phone co., and I have several other complaints, but their
LD service is good.

A little off topic but because it relates directly to my HOME telephone I
thought this group might provide good input.

I currently use at&t for my long distance service. I am paying on average
about $.30/minute (OUCH) with a monthly minimum whether I use it or not.
Time to change.

What long distance alternatives are any of you folks using that you are
satisfied with? How did you sign up? What was your cost to switch?

I know there are VoIP solutions available such as Vonage, etc. but I'd
like
to keep it right at the dial tone. Even my Comcast cable's long distance
cost is way too much around here (Central CT).

I look forward to any/all suggestions/recommendations.

Thanks
