Default Sony Plasma circuit boards: In the old days, people used to repair components?

On Thu, 2 Oct 2008 05:59:46 -0700 (PDT), myfathersson
put finger to keyboard and composed:

I have a Sony PFM500A3WU which is giving error codes 12 and 22. It
seems to mean that the low voltage rail is gone (in some way) and the
replacement cost for the board is about eight hundred bucks, which
seems to me to mean that Sony doesn't want it replaced.

Here is a full service manual for the "PFM-500A3WE (WG) WU),
PFM-510A2WE (WG) (WU)" with schematics:

The relevant board appears to be the APS-136M.

Error code 12 - Warning of decrease of panel high voltage (Vs)
POWER SUPPLY PDP VS

Error code 22 - Warning of decrease of panel middle voltage (Va)
POWER SUPPLY PDP VA

I'd start by checking connector CN5 for voltages going to, and
returning from, the Plasma Display Panel (PDP).
