6" x 2" it ain't
Wood sizes never cease to amaze me ...
Having accepted the metric system, and realise that 6"x 2" is now 150 x
50mm.
I'm well aware that sawn is different to PSE (or PAR if you are an old sod),
and I even got used to buying CLS ...
Ordered up a load of 150 x 50 treated .... to find that this is now not
plain old sawn 160 x 50, but in fact regularized size of 150 x 47
In practice what turned up was 300m of wood of average size of 145 x 45
..... now that is damn way off 6" x 2"
Used to be order sawn, and you got finished size, if you ordered PAR you
lost 1/8 off width & length
Seems nowadays you order 6" x 2" sawn and you get wood that has lost almost
a 1/4" off dimension. !
Wish they wouldn't keep messing about with sizes.
To make it even more ludicrous, I ordered 30 sheets of 8mm OSB and 24 sheets
of 11mm OSB .... and that turns up in imperial 8' x 4' size ... which had
the studs been put in at 600 centers (as per plan), would have missed all
the damn studs !
However the cladding sheets were true metric 1200 x 2400 ...... now where
is the sense in this, so they won't fit studs properly !
