I'm very sure he didNOTt spend his decades running a manual lathe.
He could have spent that time on a turret lathe, milling machine or
grinders.
All would qualify as a machinist.

That said, now you know that his knowledge is not all encompassing,
check his suggestions.

I knew many machinists that don't own machines, to them it's a job.

Others enjoy the craft.
