This is our first home, and its turned into a nightmare.

In addition to the other hints, water may be entering from a location far
removed from the area it appears. Once water enters, it can flow down
through conduit, joists, wiring, vents, plumbing raceways, ductwork, the
underside of the roof, insulation, or any other thruway.

Or, as another poster pointed out, the water may be comin UP from some
bizarre source.
