It's not a device or trick, it's called "having an adult with a brain
& experience in charge"

May be an old fashioned concept but it works very well...... used to
teach kids what to do & what not to do.

Alternatively you could choose to use a decent sized wooden spoon but
I prefer & recommend verbal instruction.

BTDT owed / lived five different homes with gas stoves over the last
30 years & never had a problem with any kids & unauthorized stove
use.
