Not sure if the chap that did it for me had rats in mind, but the rope
does not actually poke out of the bottom of the downpipe.

I could go on the roof and shorten it.

I am grateful for all the concerns expressed and suggestions made -
including the cheese

If any rat manages to get up to the level of the old roof gutter (where
the loft downpipe ends) it will deserve to get a helping hand on the
last leg
