I would suspect that the spammers post in groups that have
a high rate of hits on certain search terms. Dunno what
it is in this group that would do it, but I did notice a spam
for an online game called maple something or another.

There is a newsgroup dedicated to discussion of newsgroup
spam, news.admin.net-abuse.usenet, should you wish to
consult with people who may be more on top of the issue.
