IMNSHO the [public] problem is not that he was getting a little
on the side, possibly with a gift certificate. He seems to have
paid up fair and square, and nothing seems to have been too
kinky.

The problem is that he put the wood to a number of well-connected
republican poobahs/corporations/campaign donors (for which he is
to be congratulated), and apparently assumed that they and/or
their friends would not be out to get him.

New York state [and other governments] cannot afford to have
people with this kind of naïveté (or hubris) running things.
