Tim was in the right place, at the right time, and with
some careful thought (to minimize, but never eliminate
luck), he was successful in his stocks.

It appears that you are jealous that you weren't as 'lucky'.

And yet another from Carl.

Sometimes they *think* they are prepared, but things go to hell
anyway. I've had clients in the evil welfare office who did
everything you say they should. One particular case comes to mind
(although this is only one of many) where dad had a good job, they
were buying their house, had lots of savings, investments and so
forth, one child still at home and one adult child. Dad had a
massive heart attack, couldn't work, couldn't afford health insurance
(Cobra) after they had run through all their savings and investments.
Mom couldn't work because dad then had a stroke and couldn't be left
alone. Private in home health nurse cost would have been more than
mom could have earned. All they wound up with was his Social Security
disability and small amount for her and the child. They sold their
house (hadn't had it for very long so not much equity) and moved in
with their married child. All they got from welfare was MediCal.
Sometimes things just go to hell; it can happen to anyone who isn't
"wealthy" like you are.

The right (or wrong) set of circumstances, and just about anyone can be out
on the street. Don't matter how rich & famous (infamous?) someone may be,
the only gaurantee is death. Any day, any moment, no certainty of seeing the
day's end. Nor of being healthy and with a roof if it does come.
