The 'beep when batteries are low' is a nice feature but probably not
one you want to risk your life trusting.

That is what that little 'test' button is for. I do press that when I am
vacuuming, which includes the detectors. I also have about six
detectors- I put up 3 fresh ones when I moved in, but left the old ones
in place just so I wouldn't have to patch the holes.

I once read that you are supposed to replace the smoke detector every
10 years or something like that. I think that is just a gimmick to
sell them. If they work when the button is pushed, they work.....
