The card could be interrogated (and powered) from the legitimate nearby
source. The (higher gain) bandit receiver could be 20 feet away. In
usual practice, a card reader in the purse of the nice old lady next to
you in line would be reading your data.

In RF terms the microwave oven analogy does not hold up well (a KW
source to transmit 20 feet).
