Can't find anything in local home depot, orchard supply, lamp stores
so far (northern california). All those places seem to have
switched over to 48" x 8" t8 electronic ballast units.

Must i replace the entire unit by t8 electronic ballast unit
just if the lens cracks?

Thanks in advance.

I would consider this an excellent opportunity to replace the obsolete unit with
a new electronic version.

Yes, that;s what I would do too, unless there is some good reason not
to. These things are cheap enough, it's not worth wasting time on,
or even worse, if you start driving around looking for hard to find or
non-existent parts, you could spend as much in gas as a new fixture
costs.

If he just wants plastic lens material, they sell that for suspended
ceilings in the std suspended ceiling tile size, which can be cut down.
