It was open in 1906 when Amundsen traversed it and the Franklin
expedition passed through the northernmost part in the 1840's. The
rumor of an open passage goes way back to 1497.

Why did the Franklin crew bury their first dead in such difficult
frozen, rocky ground? Or was it clear and dry then?
