Default Black Patches on indoor outdoor carpet

I've had good luck with one of these handheld steamers. For my swimming
pool carpet, I would use pool shock. Wet the carpet, sprinkle it on, broom
it, hose it off. WARNING: Always test for color fastness first.

My experience has most of these spots occuring where people spill things.
When it happens, a complete flushing with water is needed to get the sugar
out.

My 15 year old boat has black patches on the indoor outdoor carpet. It
appears to be old mildew. Vinegar and baking soda didn't touch it. Carpet
cleaner doesn't work. Any suggestions appreciated.

On a boat it is probably polypropylene and probably safe to bleach.
Blasting it with a hard stream of water will get a lot of it out, but
bleach is the only thing I know that will kill mildew.
