aaah, doesn't that strike you as a bit dishonest? why not tell the shop up
front, please diagnose this and tell me what I need to replace, I'll pay you

It may be that the diodes in the bank of diodes in your welder are
damaged. If you need to repair this thing on a low budget, take it to
a welding repair/supply shop and ask for a written quotation. Once you
have identified the problem and the cost of the repair, you have two
options available to you.
You either go ahead with the repair at the quoted price, or you say
'No thank you' and purchase the components to DIY the repair yourself.
Be aware that the shop may be giving its best guess at the problem and
that the identification of the problem may not be correct. The fact
is, that if they have identified the problem incorrectly, and they
carry out the repair procedure, THEY have to carry the can and make
good the mistake THEY have made. If you carry out the repair based
upon their guess, YOU have to carry the can and have wasted your time
and money on the recommended repair.
