Video inputs will not work either. I suspect

the tuner.

Uh, why would you suspect the tuner if the video inputs don't work
either?

My son had his XBOX on when the storm came thru. It stopped working as
well. So if its not the tuner, where should I look?

In the yellow pages under "Electronic Repair".

Could be lots of things. The fact that the unit powers up and has sound is
a VERY good sign. The fact that neither tuner nor aux inputs work rules out
the tuner and switching circuitry... I assume that the sound works on all
inputs and is selectable.

Do the on-screen menus/displays work? I.e. channel number, input source,
etc.?

The fact that a picture appears for a split second would seem to rule out
the HOT. I'd guess something in the HV section / flyback. Anything
obviously burnt (or exploded) on the PCB?

Funny that a lightning strike would make it all the way through the PS....

Yes, the sound works on all inputs.

On screen menus work, channel number, input source.

Nothing is obviously burnt or damnaged. Circuit Board looks like new.

And I cannot locate a service manual anywhere.

And I agree that it is strange that a lightning strike would not blow
diodes and fuses in the power supply!

Seems to me that lightning pretty much goes wherever it wants, if you'll
forgive the anthropomorphism. I guess it moves too damn fast to stop
with anything other than a genuine lightning arrestor.

I had a strike on my 30' pop-up antenna years back. Came down two of the
guy wires and splintered the rafters they were anchored to. Came through
the tuner of the TV via the antenna lead, found its way to the AC line,
sort of melted and shattered three outlets around the house. Sneaked
past the breakers, went about a fifty yards up the incoming lines and
blew out the nearest pole transformer. Took the power company three days
to fix it, they kept insisting that they'd restored power to my n'hood.
Yeah, everyone but me.

Saw it happen, actually. Ten years before that I'd lost a television to
the same damn thing, so this time I got out of bed when the thunderstorm
was underway, to disconnect the antenna leads from the TV. As I walked
out into the living room, the (turned off) TV screen lit up brilliant
white. Went off like a flashbulb, lit up the whole room. Wished I'd have
gotten there a minute earlier, and glad I hadn't gotten there thirty
seconds earlier.
