Thanks for all advice. According to Mira we need a new "cassette" in
the shower at a cost of some £130, plus fitting. I suppose on an 8
year old shower that is not too bad. The other shower, which is
exactly the same, but does not get used 1/2 as much is fine.

I find that interesting John, as I have exactly the same problem. I am
thinking of replacing it with one that has a knob with a better grip.
The trouble is I anticipate it to be quite a job to replace the shower,
wish they all were all standard to fit.
