I would treat whatever the roots are attached to with a dose of RoundUp, of
course if you want to keep whatever the roots are attached to then move your
septic field.

rock salt DEFINETELY KILLS ROOTS while leaving the offending plant or
tree unhurt

However, I DONT know the effect of rock salt on a septic tank.
