Default electrical outlet

The two wires attached to a single pole switch are the hot leg, and the
return leg, which brings the hot to the thing that the switch controls. If
there is more than just the two wires attached to the switch, in the box,
chances are you have a neutral. The neutral plus the hot gives you the 120
volts

Yes, it's called a combination single pole switch and grounded outlet. or
three way switch and grounded outlet, or ... switch and gfci outlet. You
should open the switch box first and be sure you have a neutral in the
box, as the outlet can't be properly wired without one

excuse my extreme electrical ignorance, but by neutral you mean the white
wire? (if black is hot)
