Yes they are, but if you're using a network where Port 119 is closed,
and/or you're in an Internet cafe etc, you've got no choice.
nntp.aioe.org is supposed to work through Port 80, but I've never been
able to make it work.
I use nntp.aioe.org all the time through Port 119 with no problems. It has
occasionally gone off-line, but never for any extended periods. It's free
and allows posting.
