Really? Mine can be replaced in any position so that you can have the
numbers showing no matter what orientation the actual valve is in.

They're usually keyed insofar that they will only fit in one of, say,
six positions - i.e. it uses a hexagonal mating face. Perhaps that's
what matatbandq actually meant? Presumably this is to stop it from
turning whilst either tightening it up or turning the control.

Yes, so are mine: I didn't worry about getting into all the details as
it wasn't really relevant to the OP's issue
