The problem was the that I had not selected TV instead of cable. I
guess I should read the "book" they provide, but since I do not have
cable it never occurred to me that you had to program the set before
you began to watch it.

There may still be way less than optimal performance if the "rabbit ears"
are simply two extendable antennas. UHF wants a different sort of
configuration and is typically a single loop or bow-tie. So, a proper
indoor antenna should have both with a combiner if there is only a single
75 ohm input.
