You can't shorten the length without increasing the voltage on the
remaining bulbs, which will cause them to burn out quickly. What you can
do is cover the unwanted bulbs with "black out caps;" or if you can't
find those, then get some black plastic tape (like electrical tape) and
cut a 2 inch strip and fold over each bulb. Good luck.
