£60 for a grundig

..except that it aint really a Grundig. since the company went under a
couple of years back, that name has been bought and stuck on all kinds
of cheap crap. I think those sets are now made by Orion.

And? So what? Orion make the CRT tubes for many major manufacturers anyway.
Grundig were hardly the name of quality and reliability when they were
in business so no change.

I'd be interested to know how you arrived at that conclusion. On the
contrary, Grundig actually purposely used higher spec parts in many of
their TV sets thus reducing the returns rate. I and many other techs I
have spoken to over the years, have found their boards and modular
design, especially in the models up till the mid 1990s, extremely
straighforward to work on and well enginnered. By and large extremely
good sets and reliable too. of course all that came at a price....
Unfortunately due to cheapskate people preferring to buy the lowest
priced sets around regardless of reliability, they couldn't compete
against the turkish and chinese stuff and went under.
In the last few years, even once good manufacturers like JVC and
Hitachi have followed and only seem to be making their own units of 25"
and up or in a higher price bracket. They have their 14" and 21" sets
made by the low cost manufacturers to stay in the market. Bottom line :
You get what you pay for in electronics.
