As posted earlier, the media, the 1.44 floppies are universal, however the
actual mechanical drive assemblies are proprietary, even in some cases
machine to machine in the same manufacturer. You will require the correct
device to fit back into the Compaq Laptop.

Before you type your password, credit card number, etc.,
be sure there is no active keystroke logger (spyware) in your PC.
In my opinion all 1.44 MB floppies are the same. I don't even look at
their
part numbers when I change one out.

But does that apply to laptops? They often do use proprietary parts,
which is why extra parts are often so expensive. It likely also
depends on vintage, the further back in time the more likely it is
a unique device to that laptop.
