I know this isn't really a repair related question however, I am hoping

I am trying to work out the best way of connecting the line-output
connection on a mixer to an XLR input on a professional Sony
camcorder?

Can this be done without a transformer? If so, will the quality be
affected?

Normal way is screen pins 1&3. Pin 2 remains 'hot'.

If there's phantom power on the input switch it off. Be careful with
levels and do some checks. Don't assume that because it's switched to line
it can handle a 'full on' line signal. Same with it switched to mic. Most
semi pro camcorders have pretty dreadful sound electronics. DigiBeta are
usually ok.

A decent transformer, of course, is the best solution.
