Default light wiring problem

I J H wrote:

Hi,

i have recently acquired a new ceiling light fitting. i removed the old
fitting some time ago, the wiring showed it is of the loop-in variety of
curcuit.
i fitted the new light but when i came to switch it on - nothing, i double
checked the connections to the light, they were ok, changed the bulb - still
the same. put the old light fitting back in - still nothing. i took
another fitting from another room that i knew worked - still nothing.
checked the switch connections - still nothing, swapped the switch - still
nothing. i did notice on the switch that both connecting wires were red and
neither was marked up as the live feed, but i connected it back up the same
way anyhow.

Any ideas what i can try next before i have to resort to calling someone
out?

tia.

I.

Make up a long lead to the neutral pin of a plug ( the non fused one bottom left
as you look into the plug with the back off) and connect to one side of a light
bulb. Plug into a wall socket Add a second piece of wire to the other bulb
connection and bare the other end of this wire a few mm.

Touch this onto various points in your ceiling rose and switch to see what is
live and if the switch works etc.

This should help you draw out a circuit and see what is happening.
