Assuming you can get at one end of it, I'd disconnect it, drill a
clearance hole in the rafters, and re-thread the wire, like it should
have been done in the first place. If it isn't long enough, just use a
junction box for the splice, and you are in business. I hope it is
really 12/2 with ground!
