Default Remodel kitchen - cabinet depth refrigerator?

Looks like I might need to buy a refrigerator prior to remodeling
my kitchen. I'm told by contractors that I should buy a
cabinet-depth fridge (side-by-side), but I get different
explanations of what that means. Near as I can tell, the box
(excluding door) should be 23-24" deep, and the maximum total
depth including handles should be 28". Does that sound about right?

Yes. Cabinet depth means that when the refrigerator is installed, the
front face of the -cabinet (not the door) is at the same distance
from the wall as a normal base cabinet, or 24". The cabinet depth
refrigerators I've seen are all "normal" height, about 70".

I've seen bottom-freezer cabinet depth refrigerators, about 36" wide,
but only about 20 cu. ft., while the side-by-sides, also about 36"
wide are advertised as 22 cu. ft. We have an Amana side-by-side
cabinet depth model.

Refrigerators that are advertised as "cabinet depth" have full skins
on both sides and the top, so they can be installed in places where
they're only partially enclosed.

If you're really building the refrigerator into your cabinetry, you
also have the option of going with a full "built-in", where there's no
cabinet to hide the refrigerator's frame. They're usually more
expensive, but you can probably find more size and shape options.
