Sure we do. There has been research for 50 years on using it for
vehicles. Nuclear plants to make Hydrogen from water. It may well be
the fuel of the future.

You would be a lot better using that nuke plant to simply supply
electricity. It is a more efficient way to distribute the energy.

But it is not a portable fuel that can be used in vehicles. I had
great hopes they might get fusion to work but after 50 years and still
not breaking even it will not happen in my lifetime. I can't see
ethanol supplying adequate portable fuel for the world. And we still
burn diesel to heat our houses!!

Oil is not going to suddenly disappear. It will continue to get less
plentiful and harder to extract - More expensive. As it does the
alternate fuels will become more attractive.
