Do you just want a straight line or a straight line that is also
perpendicular to the face frame or cabinet front? If the latter, a
framing square works.

Right. A standard framing square has legs of 16" and 24", which works
out well with a standard kitchen cabinet's 24" depth. Stick a level on
top of the framing square to get your level line.
