Default FluidMaster Valve not filling tank

Easy to do kits are less than $10 at home depot, you may wish to make sure
the valve on the toilet supply line completely cuts off the water before
beginning in case you run into problems and don't want the whole house to be
without water.

The subject says it all.

Toiletbowl flushes, flap opens, drops down, bowl clears, but Fluid
Master is silent.

I find that if either I tap it, twist it, or otherwise manipulate it,
it will work once and fill the tank properly. After that, it's on
strike again.

Any way to fix it, or is this a throw it way - DIY job?
