I just splurged on a Tempurpedic (mainly because my wife insisted). We are

very happy with it.

Now that we got their information package, and their little sample of
memory foam, my wife seems awfully interested in one, too (suddenly,
we're "not sleeping as well as we should")

;-)

Any downside to the Tempurpedic ... other than price?

Haven't found one yet.

However, since the foam is temperature-sensitive, it will not work well in an
unheated room in a cold climate. I don't have the specifics, but when it gets
cold (40F or so?), it gets hard as a rock and may take several hours to warm to
"normal" consistency. However, we keep our room at 62 at night, and it's not a
problem at that temp.

I've always been concerned that the Tempurpedic would be a little too
molded to my body for my liking; I overheat easily. I've been very
happy with our Select Comfort (Sleep by Number) bed, which is
adjustable and otherwise very flexible. We're using this right now on
a sheet of plywood in a new-to-us headboard/footboard bed frame (the
box springs wouldn't fit), and it seems fine.
