If it's really not dying out, then it is VERY likely
to be extremely frequency-dependant. Adding sand
might just do it. Test whether changing the frequency
will help by clamping a large weight near the upper
part of the column with "lossy" pads between weight,
column, and clamps. If the vibration changes in frequency
or amplitude, you may be on track to cure it.
