1) carbide will turn harder materials than HSS. This is
one reason for the hsm type to keep a selection of carbide
inserts handy.

2) *Coated* carbide inserts have a deliberately honed
edge. The uncoated ones (and I have used a *lot* of
these) are razor sharp and cut like it.
