and so forth. Every pdf reader I have says there are errors in the
documents and will not open them.

What means did you use to download them? If you used ftp, you
need to be sure to set it to "binary" mode before downloading, or it
will be trying to "fix" end-of-line sequences.
I figured (after reading the other responses) that perhaps I
should show the actual size of the downloaded files, and then run "sum"
on them (try comparing that on your linux box):
