Default Standard sizes for laundry?

In planning a laundry room, if you don't already have a washer/dryer
picked out, how do you allocate the amount of space for them? Do they
always come in one standard size?

If you don't know in advance and err on the side of allocating more
(rather than less) space, you could be left with ugly spaces should you
choose smaller W/D combination.

How is this problem usually handled?

Thanks
Speaking as a retired washer/dryer salesman, washers are 27 inches wide by
25 1/2 inches deep. Allow another 4 inches or so for hoses, etc. Dryers
come in 27 inch wide and 29 inch wide and you should allow at least 32
inches for depth, although there is a so called "flat back" smaller dryer
that will fit in 30 inches. I would personally allow for 60 inches wide by
34 inches deep for the area where the washer and dryer will sit. If I was
leaning toward the new super size front load machines, I would add a couple
of inches to that depth but no more for width. You need a little space on
each side of the machines to prevent rubbing against each other and to be
able to get a vacuum's crevice tool in for cleaning.
