Default Glass Fireplace Screen

wrote:
I want to make a glass fireplace screen out of a 2' x 3' piece of
glass. (I know it can be done because my brother has had one for
years, but doesn't know where it came from.)

I am planning to get one of my glass suppliers to provide a piece of
glass with the foot holes pre-drilled and handling holes in the top.

I'm not sure what sort of heat treatment the glass should have. Would
tempering help it withstand the heat, or make it more prone to
shatter? I can get just about any treatment (tempering, annealed, heat
strengthened, etc) but am not sure which is best for a relatively high
heat situation.

Anyone know?

Thanks,

Ian

You can't use ordinary glass. Finding someone who will make up the
glass you want, is possible, but it may be more expensive than you think.
The whole project may well cost you more than buying prefab doors. Your
best bet in finding the glass is to check with a custom fireplace shop and
ask them about getting just the glass. I would guess very few regular glass
shops are going to have a source for the glass.
