Default Glass Fireplace Screen

I want to make a glass fireplace screen out of a 2' x 3' piece of
glass. (I know it can be done because my brother has had one for
years, but doesn't know where it came from.)

I am planning to get one of my glass suppliers to provide a piece of
glass with the foot holes pre-drilled and handling holes in the top.

I'm not sure what sort of heat treatment the glass should have. Would
tempering help it withstand the heat, or make it more prone to shatter?
I can get just about any treatment (tempering, annealed, heat
strengthened, etc) but am not sure which is best for a relatively high
heat situation.

Anyone know?

Thanks,

Ian
