The simple logic is that removing all firearms from private
individuals and criminals would save thousands of lives annually in
America, of course this wouldn't happen overnight but could be
achieved in time.

Simple logic dictates that removing all firearms from criminals will
save save tens of thousands of people from being killed by firearms.
Unfortunately, many of those will still be killed or severely injured
by knives, clubs, vehicles, etc.

Removing all firearms from non criminal private individuals will save
roughly 1000 persons annually from death by firearm. It could easily
cost many times that annually in deaths from criminal activities
currently prevented by the private individuals possessing firearms.

Given the practical problems in disarming the criminal population, I
don't see it happening any time soon.
