Found this monster crawling around on our landing this evening. What is it?

It doesn't look so big in the pictures but it's inside a beer glass (sans
beer :-) and about 30mm from snout to tail.

Shake it and stick it in your keks ...

looks like a wasp to me, as I think that hornets have a proportionally
longer abdomen
