This is one of those old maths problems. How many colours do you need for
a map so you never get the same colour across country boundaries. I thought
that the answer was four. Perhaps not. Anyway my local tile merchant has at
least two ranges with multiple colours. These are thick 4" continental-style
tiles. Is that what you had in mind? So try a dealer that the pros go to.

As for diy. Unless things have changed I don't think that this is possible.
You
need a proper clay kiln to get the right temperatures to make a hardwearing
glaze. I knew some people in Harlow who did when I lived there. Long time
ago so I can't remember the name. They've probably moved on. However if
you're
near it might be worth trying Parndon Mill or Burnt Mill.
