mesh shelves instead of wood
 

made a lumbber rack recently and used some galvanized welded mesh instead
of solid wood for the shelf for few reasons

makes it easy to see from underneath what is on the bottom

easy to keep it clean and keeps it all drier


may try this with a bookshelf but instead will probably go with some
stainless mesh

it gives it a modern look and is also easier to keep clean

the mesh can be expensive depending on what you get but it looks good


anyone tried using a mesh instead of wood for shelves

Not sure why you would need anything other than cross supports for lumber?

I would not use anything other than solid shelving for books, you may certainly do whatever you wish...

I was just at Menards earlier tonight. The answer is yes, and they sell
it commercially. There's shelf liners available too, which would be
essential for using such a shelf with something like books.

Probably not a good idea for books. The mesh would impress itself
into the bottom edge of the books. Mesh would be fine for hard stuff,
but not for softer stuff, such as books.

turns out i have a metal decorative shelf that has books on it
and the books are fine

maybe depends on the mesh size

there are a lot of choices in ss meshes

there is a hoenycomb pattern that is completely flat

A buddy had some aluminum docks delivered to his cottage. They came on four
8' pallets. After we put the docks in the water, we screwed some PT 2x4's
legs onto the pallets. Now he has a 16', 2 tiered (32' total) rack for his
firewood.

Might just put a 1/4" of exotic wood there and the books would
be supported by it and the metal supporting the wood.
