Bench Top Drill Press That Can Swing Drill Head

I would like to know if there is any bench top drill press that can
swing its drill head out in order to drill into the end of a tall
piece.

I know I can drill to the end of a tall piece using a floor-standing
model. But floor-standing model is too big for my small one-car garage
woodshop. Therefore, I am looking for a bench top model.

But the problem with bench top model is that I may have a hard time to
use it to drill into the end of a tall piece. One way that I can see
to get around with this problem is to place the bench top drill press
near the edge of the bench, stand the tall piece on the floor against
the side of the bench, swing the drill head outward to drill to the
end of the tall piece.

I have seen a Ryobi 12" drill press in Home Depot that seems to be
able to swing the drill head out. But it is not cheaper than a Delta
12" drill press by much. If a Ryobi is similarly priced as a Delta, I
would prefer to get a Delta _if_ the Delta 12" drill press also can
swing the drill head out.

What I am trying to know is whether there are other drill presses that
also can swing the drill head out.

Thanks in advance.

When assembling the drill press the top is held in position with two set
screws (at least my craftsman is) by loosening these screws you can pivot
the drill press head. This will allow you to rotate the head off side to
drill into tall pieces.

I've never seen one where you couldn't swing the head. Usually it's held on
with a larg bolt or a couple tiny setscrews.

The type that can move the head about is called a radial drill press.
Here's one:

If the model isn't described as a radial drill press, then chances are,
it's a fixed-head model.

Great! This means I have many options available.

Thanks all the newsgroup members who have responsed.

Jay,
Take a look at the Grizzly Mod 7945 RADIAL press that Joe Wells is pointing
out {the link won't get you exactly to it - type G7945 in the 'search box'.}

I agonized over this same issue several years ago. The unit is bolted to the
outside corner of a heavy duty workbench. This allows me a 270 degree
'swing', with a 30 {+} inch 'reach', plus the ability to 'rotate' around the
horizontal axis.

Well worth 5 speeds vs. 12, and the 'regular' vs. 'heavy duty' motor.

This drill press with a radius head seems to be more than what I need.
But the difference is only $50. I will think about this.

Thanks.

If you do much drilling of metal or with larger bits in wood you might find the
radial drill press to be too flexible.
