That is the problem. We are not the only ones.

That would be great, except that most major ISPs dropped the entire
alt.binaries hierarchy about two months ago.

Me too. ABPW is toast due to kiddie porn (or more profit). People
are beginning to use sites like flickr to post pictures.

Unfortunately, the rest of the (uncensored) world will continue sharing
their images on a.b.p.w

Kinda sucks, doesn't it?

Give up on posting woodworking photos on usenet. Better format and image
viewing on web based forums. Several for woodworking, do a Google or MSN
search for: woodworking forums. Many hobby woodworking magazines sponsor
web based forums.

Web based forums are mostly moderated to ban politics, gross / sexist
jokes, and links to porn sites.

Others can recommend their favorite web based forums.

I disagree. Abpw is still there and going strong. I got an astraweb
subscription (Pay By Download 25GB, $10, paid on June 10). I still have
over 24 GB available today (goes to show how ittle is used when daily going
to just a few newsgroups that were canned by Verizon).

It's well worth the $10 to stay abreast.

There are many subscribers who can not get ABPW through their ISP and
most of those won't change ISPs nor get a separate subscription. More
ISPs are dropping binaries. Posts will certainly decrease because
fewer users will have access. I no longer post nor get binaries in
newsgroups, but visiting more blogs and picture websites instead. Who
needs an additional expense? $120 a year is just not worth it, at
least that will buy me two months of gasoline.

When I discovered I wasn't getting it, I did a search and came up with
two free hosts who apparantly have the NG in question.

Do a search using:

http://freenews.maxbaud.net

news.readfreenews.net is not up to date.

You misread my post, or I did not make it clear enough. I paid $10 for
the privilege of downloading 25GB (does not include headers). There is
no expiration date that I know of. Since June 10 (3 month worth of
access) I have used less than 1 of those 25 GB. At that rate I will have
used up the 25 GB in about 6 years, at less than $0.15 per month.

Personally I never much liked using USENET for binaries. Very clumsy
solution. Flickr is free, retention is "as long as flickr stays in
business", posting a photo automatically creates thumbnails in several
sizes (very handy for those who don't have broadband--they can get a
look and decide whether it's something they want _before_ they
download the whole monstrous thing), there's only a single image
format to deal with, the images are linkable, so one can include a
direct link in one's post rather than having to say "check APBW", you
can include keywords and titles, and whatnot and organize your images
by named sets, with all that, why dink around with a binaries
newsgroup?

And I'm not saying that because I don't get binaries, I've been using
Newsguy for years and Newguy most assuredly carries binaries
(furthermore, they upgraded their server capacity considerably a
couple of days ago).

Both have their place.

If you have a ten photo "how-to" then a web based gallery is ideal. If ten
people have one photo each, I can easily look at the subjects on the
newsgroup and look at what is of interest to me. Faster than following ten
links to ten web pages.

Most folks that use newsgroups are willing to fork out $3 a month for a real
news service like APN or giganews..

Yup...

web albums are cool for showing off work, but ABPW is where you can post a
picture and start a discussion..
Sort of like apples and oranges, IMHO..
