you counteract these with your own reaction-formations.

No, the important thing about travel in foreign lands is knowing
how to say, "Please, where is the toilet?"; and possibly carrying a
personal supply of toilet paper. Next most important is knowing how to
say, "Thank you.", and saying it.

Agreed on all counts. You can get splinters from some of the things that
pass for TP in some places.

A third one is to know how to order two beers. It makes it real easy to
make a friend in an unfamiliar place...
